90. Sorting Coins

coin 1
coin 2

coin 3

coin 4

coin 5

coin 6

coin 7

What coin collectors do during Saturday? I do not know for others, but for amateur collector like me, I sort coins! And what did I find? Well no big findings but only these seven coins I separate it from others.

Anyone would like to try why  I separate these coins? ;-)

One of my target in my collection is to complete the Singapore Merchant Coins series. Among all, this particular piece is one of my primary target. Praise to God finally I managed to acquire this coin at a very affordable price. Even the condition is not very appealing, but again quality is not my major concern. Indulgence is.

By the way, do you know where is Tanah Melayu supposed to be? or where was Tanah Melayu in 1835/1836?

87. Malaysia 20 Sen 1977 Rim-To-Rim Die Crack Error

image 1: obverse and reverse of the coin

This is a major rim-to-rim die crack error coin, or can I use term multi rim-to-rim die crack error coin to this specimen? Interestingly the crack lines separate the reverse of the coin almost at the same area.

For any mechanical engineering students out there, perhaps you are aware that failures are mostly happen at the area which has the stress concentration factors on it. So in attempt to analyse this specimen with my little knowledge, the crack initiation of the die might start along the tail of number "2", because it is located near the center of the  coin, which experienced the highest stress and pressure during striking stage. The crack grew along the tail to the rim at 8 o'clock and for some reason it splits into two crack lines, most probably to distribute the pressure and also to facilitate the other crack line that passed through the alphabet "Y" at 1 o'clock of the reverse.

85. Malaysia 5 Sen 2010 Die Crack Error aUNC

image 1: obverse and reverse of the coin

A die crack error on the reverse of the coin starting from the rim at 4 o'clock to the center of the coin. This is considered as minor die crack as the thickness of the crack line is not so thick and only about 0.5cm in length.

84. Malaysia 10 sen 1982 Rotated Die Error

Another rotated die error. This time is for Malaysia 10 Sen dated 1982. It is approximately 20 degree  clockwise direction (CW) as you can see in image 2.

83. Malaysia 50 Sen 1983 Die Clashed Error Obverse and Reverse

image 1: obverse and reverse of the coin

image 2: silhouettes of the coin motifs due to clashed die

This time I really need help from my fellow collector friends. Is this a die clashed error coin, both on reverse and obverse of it? The obverse shows some sign of die clashed error, similar to common die clashed error of 10 sen parliament series, but unfortunately it is not so heavy. I suspect the faint lines is a part of the number "50" when the clash of the dies happen.  And interestingly after inspecting its reverse, I can see some faint, but visible silhouette of parliament building on the reverse, as shown in image 2.

This is my birthday gift from my best friend. He suspected that this is a fake coin and refused to give me because he thought I am not into fake coins. If only he knew that I was longing for this coin. Hehe.

82. Malaysia 10 Sen 1981 Rotated Die Error

image 1: obverse and reverse of the coin

image 2: obverse of the coin, compared to the normal one on the right side

image 3: the degree of rotation
This is a rotated die error coin, approximately 135 degree rotation clockwise.

Rotated die error happens when one of the dies was being improperly installed. This type of error coin is the among the most challenging to be spotted because you need to flip over each coin in order to discover it. In fact, I did not search for rotated die error coins but fortunately I found this by luck.

The highest degree of rotation should be 180 degree and this should be the most desired for this rotated die error coin. In my opinion, do not buy this type of coin in the market (unless they are too cheap) but find them yourself in your piggy banks! Surely the enjoyment is not the same as buying it.

81. Malaysia Included Gas Bubble Planchet 1 sen 1996

image 1: obverse and reverse of the coin

    Another error coin!

This error is under the category of damaged and defective planchets. According to numismaster.com, they are two types of bubble-related planchet error, Bubled Plating Planchet and Included Gas Bubble Planchet. Still not sure which one is precisely described this coin.

In my opinion, this type of error, the bubble which can be seen on the obverse of the coin is caused by improper planchets making during its manufacturing process. When the striking occurs onto the planchet, probably the temperature of the planchet is increased, hence making the gas entrapped inside the planchet exploded. The high increase in pressure and temperature during the striking process or just right after the striking process, damaged the planchet, which act as a vessel for the gas. Just a wild hypothesis though.

By the way, am I right?

80. Malaysia 5 Sen 2008 Doubled Die Reverse ( DDR )

image 1: obverse and reverse of the coin

   My second doubled die coin!

I think this is a Type IV Doubled Die Reverse ( DDR ) due to Offset Hub Doubling. Through my observation, all the doubling in the reverse are in the same direction, which is towards 11 o'clock direction offset. Furthermore, the degrees of doubling on the design elements around the rim as in the center of the coin are the same.

This type of doubling happen occurs when the working hub is not alligned centrally exactly the same as the previous hubbing. Thus the die is hubbed with two different centers.

Personally I think this is a quite nice doubled die coin. How can we categorized a doubled die coin as a monster?

79. British North Borneo One Cent Coins 1904 - 1941 H

image 2: obverse and reverse of 1935

Both in poor grades, but still okay for me as I am looking to complete the years and looking for cheap coins! Still missing 1904, 1921 and 1941. Each coin costs me less than RM10.

78. India Straits One Cent 1862 or 1912 ?

image 1: obverse and reverse of the coin
Just bought this coin just for the sake of not wanting to walk empty-handed on my visit to Pasar Karat JB. Excessive chopmarks can be seen on both reverse and obverse of the coin. Someone can decipher the chopmarks on the coin for me, please?

I think that this is a India Straits One Cent 1862 coin, but was being altered to year 1912.

77. Malaysia 20 Sen 1992 Error Coin - Die Break and Doubled Die / Mechanical Doubling

A die chip and MDD! Worthless piece of error coin but still worthy to reside in my album.
