Terjumpa lagi dalam kocek sekeping syiling Doubled Die kegemaran saya. Bagi saya syiling ini adalah syiling yang paling cute dalam banyak - banyak syiling DD Malaysia yang boleh dijumpai.

Anjakan keseluruhan devices ke arah jam 10 yang ada pada belah belakang syiling ini bagi saya amat menarik. Untuk syiling varieti DD, petua untuk mencari DD dalam longgokan syiling anda adalah dengan mengingati tahun syiling yang mempunyai DD. Sebagai contoh, hanya tahun 2008 mempunyai gandaan seperti dalam gambar di atas. Cantik bukan?

MALAYSIA 50 SEN DDO !

Penemuan terbaru bagi saya, 50 sen yang mempunyai ciri Doubled Die pada belah hadapan (Obverse).

Dapatkah pembaca mengenalpasti bahagian yang mempunyai ciri-ciri DD? Entri lengkap mengenai syiling ini akan saya kirimkan pada esok hari. Kira ini adalah teaser lah. =)

Pencarian yang tak henti-henti akhirnya menemukan saya dengan sebiji lagi 10sen2007 DDR. Boleh dilihat dengan jelas pergandaan yang berlaku pada variti DD ini adalah yang terbesar antara rakan-rakannya.

Ramai antara rakan saya yang pada mulanya tidak perasan apakah yang istimewa dengan syiling ini pada sekali pandang, akan tetapi selepas melihat dengan sedikit teliti, mereka mula mengesyaki yang mata mereka kabur kerana melihat adanya pergandaan pada bahagian kiri muka belakang syiling ini.

Pergandaan pada syiling ini, terutamanya yang paling jelas boleh dilihat pada angka 20 adalah bukan disebabkan dua kali cetak, akan tetapi ianya disebabkan cetakan yang dibuat oleh acuan yang telah mengalami ralat ketika proses pembuatannya.

LAGI 1 SEN 1980 DDR

Spesimen kedua saya untuk 1 sen 1980 DDR. Suka hati saya melihat keadaan syiling ini yang masih dalam gred yang tinggi dengan masih ada kekilatan di kedua-dua belah.

Nampaknya untuk yang sini, ada sedikit kecacatan mirip die gouges pada kawasan sekitar angka 80. Berbeza dengan spesimen pertama saya sebelum ini.

Ramai yang bertanyakan kepada saya apakah yang dimaksudkan dengan DDR, dan apakah yang menarik dan istimewa mengenai syiling ini?

Apa itu DDR?

       "DDR" sebenarnya adalah singkatan daripada perkataan "Doubled Die Reverse". Terma Doubled Die merujuk kepada sejenis varieti syiling di mana acuan yang digunakan untuk mencetak syiling telah mempunyai gandaan pada rekabentuknya. Manakala perkataan reverse pula merujuk kepada di bahagian manakah gandaan berlaku pada syiling. Untuk kes 1 sen 1980 ini, gandaan berlaku pada bahagian belakang (reverse) syiling - lihat anak panah yang berwarna kuning. Klik pada gambar untuk pembesaran.

Apakah yang menarik dan istimewa untuk syiling DDR?

          Fenomena DDR sebenarnya walaupun dikelaskan sebagai varieti, akan tetapi ianya melibatkan ralat - atau error yang berlaku ketika proses pembuatan acuan. Sebagaimana niche koleksi numismatik yang lain, variasi Doubled Die ini biasanya dikumpul oleh pengumpul kerana keunikannya yang menghasilkan gandaan bertindih yang cantik dan juga faktor kejarangannya untuk dijumpai berbanding syiling normal.

        Niche pengumpulan syiling DD begitu hangat di US - di mana ianya terjual dengan harga ribuan USD.      Penemuan varieti Doubled Die bagi sahaja bukan sahaja daripada pencarian sendiri dan pencarian rakan-rakan, malah juga dengan melihat kepada aktiviti jualan secara online. Amat jarang rasanya variti DD syiling Malaysia dijual secara online, mungkin kerana niche variti masih baru di kalangan pengumpul dan penggemar numismatik.

    Baru-baru ini saya amat teruja melihat akan sebiji 5 sen 1982 yang mempunyai variti Doubled Die yang belum pernah saya lihat. Gandaan yang menyeluruh dan jelas ini, jika boleh diperoleh oleh saya dan ditangkap menggunakan kamera yang lebih bagus tentu amat cantik. Akan tetapi sayangnya dek kesibukan Hari Raya Haji saya terlupa untuk mengintip syiling ini dan menjadi tuan barunya. Sayangnya setelah dirisik, nampaknya syiling DD yang bagi saya amat cantik ini akan terbang menuju ke US berjumpa tuan barunya. Sedih juga melihat syiling DD kita direbut oleh orang luar.

   Seperti yang boleh dilihat di bawah, syiling ini terjual dengan harga termasuk kos pengeposan sebanyak USD50, kira-kira RM150. Nampaknya jika semakin ramai yang tahu akan variti Doubled Die ini, mungkin 5 sen 1982 ini menjadi antara koleksi buruan yang berharga.

        Akhirnya perasaan yang hampir kecewa dan putus asa selepas meneliti 9500 keping 1 sen diubati dengan satu spesimen DDR yang saya jumpa ini. Agak pelik juga saya kenapa hampir 10 ribu keping 1 sen yang saya periksa, tiada satu pun daripada tahun yang sedikit keluarannya - keydate - iatu 1968 dan 1970. Mungkin DDR yang ini tahu saya sedang memburunya. =D

     Analisis percubaan saya untuk syiling ini boleh dibaca melalui entri saya di blog teknikal khusus yang baru saya usahakan.

    Walaupun gandaan ini boleh dilihat dengan agak jelas pada gambar yang saya paparkan di atas, akan tetapi secara langsungnya gandaannya agak sukar untuk dilihat, biarpun dengan mata saya yang sihat ini. Antara petua yang boleh saya kongsi adalah dengan melihat pada angka 0 - jika angka 0 nya nampak seperti macam tidak sempurna, besar kemungkinan ianya adalah syiling DDR ini. Oh ya, sudah tentu penggunaan kanta pembesar amat-amat membantu dan ianya juga mengelak mata anda daripada rosak.

    Seperti biasa ingin lagi saya nasihatkan kepada pengumpul yang ingin memburu syiling ini, pastikan memburu dengan keadaan yang segar, persekitaran yang tenang dan cukup cahaya. Dan satu lagi selepas membelek syiling 1 sen, terus basuh tangan dengan segera kerana mengikut pengalaman saya, debu logam dan kotoran daripada syiling boleh melekat dengan banyak pada tangan kita selepas membelek syiling dalam kuantiti yang banyak.

LAGI VARIETI DOUBLED DIE 5 SEN 2009 DDR

Bagi pengumpul syiling variti Doubled Die, tentu penemuan baru seperti ini amat dinanti-nanti. Kebelakangan ini disebabkan semakin ramai yang mula berminat untuk mengumpul syiling variti Doubled Die, semakin ramai "pemburu" yang bertugas untuk mencari varieti-varieti Doubled Die yang tersorok dalam edaran.

Baru-baru ini rakan facebook saya, saudara Kuan Seng nampaknya bertuah dapat menemui satu lagi variti baru Doubled Die bagi syiling Malaysia. Boleh dilihat daripada gambar di atas, gandaan amat jelas dilihat pada stigma bunga raya di mana notching dan lembah (valley) dapat di lihat di antara gandaan device.

Sayang sekali untuk spesimen ini ianya kemungkinan adalah daripada "later die state doubling" iatu hasil cetakan daripada acuan yang sudah lama digunakan. Harapnya ada spesimen yang terhasil daripada awal cetakan acuan yang mempunyai cetakan yang lebih baik boleh dijumpai.

Gandaan pada syiling varieti ini nampaknya boleh dilihat pada kawasan stigma dan kawasan ke atas stigma menuju ke arah huruf ALA dalam perkataan MALAYSIA. Akan tetapi disebabkan keadaan acuan yang sudah lama, kebanyakan gandaan pada kawasan berdekatan rim ini tidak dapat dilihat dengan lebih jelas akibat diganggu oleh metal flowlines.

Ada sesiapa di sini dah menjumpai variti Doubled Die ini? Mari kongsikan di sini. Tapi awas, membelek syiling 5 sen dalam kuantiti yang banyak boleh menjejaskan kesihatan mata anda. Sentiasa pastikan rehat yang cukup dan belek syiling di tempat yang terang dan selesa. =)

Dubbed by its owner - The Ghostly Congkak, this DDO coin is currently at the top of my wanted list. =D

Doubling is strongest at the area of 10 o'clock and shows no doubling at the opposite site. Could it be the Class 5 - Pivoted Hub Doubling?

Officially return from long hiatus, holiday and honeymoon. :)

Just a short post to echo what blogger whycollect had posted some weeks ago.

" Varieties create excitement in numismatic."

I had to be in complete agreement with him that varieties brings excitements to the collectors. I still remember the first time I discovered a DDR of 50 sen 2009 a year ago - one of my most pleasant moment in my collecting journey. =D

Among all DDV coins of Malaysia, my favourite still with this little cutey that I adopted from her biological father, blogger depankanta. =D

So here I share what I collect through out my absence.

Poor that 20 sen DDR, of all 20 sen available, why you were the one chosen to be toned? Remind me of a damaged similar coin belongs to blogger whycollect. :-)

Most of these DD coins are still can be found among circulation coins - provided that you are aware of them and a little bit of luck.Who knows you can catch a UNC one?

Many thanks to blogger Nu who was pointing this Doubled Die Obverse (DDO) out to us some months ago.

After he wrote this article, I quickly search for this coin but to no avail. Only recently when I asked my fellow friends in my facebook group, it seems that there are many of these DDO has been kept by collectors. Most of them are not aware that this is another variety of 50 sen 1984 - which can be included into doubled die variety category.

Doubled die variety coin is a booming niche in numismatic scene in the US.

And it is sad that none of this doubled die coin - which many of them are monstrous - are not listed in our local catalogue. And suprisingly die gouge errors were listed!

The best part of collecting variety coin is that it trains us to be more particular. I myself am not aware of this doubling until Nu pointed this out. Furthermore, variety coin collecting gives challenge in analysis part - of what kind of doubling. Currently there are eight classes of doubled die. And last but not least, collecting variety coin is fun, rewarding and cheap. Only some knowledge, passion and perseverance are required, not handsome money.

For this coin, it is obvious the doubling is offsetted to 4 o'clock direction. But the doubling only cover on area around 4 o'clock at the obverse, nearer to the rim. Could it be a Tilt Hub Doubling?

168. 10 sen 2007 Doubled Die Reverse (DDR) Class V - Pivoted Hub Doubling

My constant look out for weird coins landed this monster into my palm. I am still now still in disbelief that I have acquired the mother of the doubled die coins of Malaysia.

The first time I know that this DDR exists is when I stumbled upon an article from NUMISMASTER.COM.

It is quite amazing and proud to see a Malaysian variety coin appeared in a well-known US coin collector website. It is found out that the first known of this DDR now reside in Hawaii, far away from her motherland. She flied to Hawaii across the Pacific Ocean! To such extent the elusiveness of this coin can be said.

In my attempt to recognize the type of this doubled die, I think this is a Type V - Pivoted Hub Doubling Doubled Die.


This type of doubling occurs due to working hub is not properly aligned with the working die. This type of doubling is quite similar with Class 1 (Rotated Hub Doubling), but the pivot point is located somewhere around the rim. Thus, doubling magnitude is not the same along the rim.

The doubling is strongest on one side (in this case, left side of reverse), with little or no doubling on the opposite side of the coin (right side of reverse, see 7 of 07 and A of MALAYSIA). The doubling will increase as you travel around the rim of the coin until you come to the widest doubling. From this point on, the doubling starts to decrease until you return to the starting point with no doubling. This point of no doubling is called pivot point. The pivot point of this coin is found at 3.30 o'clock at the reverse.

And the doubling is in counter clockwise direction.

My latest doubled die coin.

I think so far this is the only one Malaysian coin known for having doubling at its obverse.

This monstrous doubling is actually a major one, but due to small size of 5 sen coin, it hurts my eyes a bit.

I am still unsure about this doubled die class. Could it be a Class I Doubled Die, due to Rotated Hub Doubling?

138. Malaysia 20 sen 2008 Doubled Die Variety Reverse Type V Pivoted Hub Doubling

    Now I shared the same feeling as blogger whycollect had anticipated in his post, not too long ago. Mixed feelings between happy and frustration. Being happy for discovering another doubled die coin, which is not easily acquired as nobody is selling them right now, and frustrated as the condition of the coin is not in a desirable state.

   This is most probably a Type V Doubled Die Reverse (DDR) - Pivoted Hub Doubling, Counter Clockwise Direction (CCW), pivoted at 10 o'clock which occurs when the working die is not properly aligned with the working hub, thus rotated during one of the hubbing processess.

   The doubling is clearly stronger at one side, which is the right side of the reverse. The doubling will increase as you travel around the rim until you come to the strongest point, and starts decrease till you return to the point of no doubling. This point of no doubling is called pivot point. From this specimen, the pivot point is most likely located at 10 o'clock position.

    This is my second specimen of this variety. This is my first specimen in a nicer condition.

126. Straits Settlements 20 Cent 1919 Clashed Die & Doubled Die Reverse Type VII (Modified Hub Doubling)

     Clashed die error and cracked die error are not too interesting especially for older coins. But something caught our eyes about the first number "one" and "nine" in the date of the coin (refer to image 3). Could it probably a Doubled Die Class IV, a Modified Hub Doubling?

   I believe so because the doubling shows as the difference between the normal hub and modified hub. Probably the earlier "19" was chiseled off from the hub because it ran off its track. This is an extract from an external source.

Modified hub doubling is caused when a normal master hub is used with a modified master hub to make a master die. Some part of the modified master hub was ground off to make it match the normal hub. During this process, not all the original item was completely ground off. One master hub could have the date set lower, so the date is ground off and it is hubbed with a normal master hub that has the date in the correct location. Since this occurs on the master hubs, a larger number of working dies could be affected. bakercoins.com

109. Malaysia 50 Sen 2009 Doubled Die

      I try to put some distance between me and error coins, but apparently error coins miss me too much! Haha. Found this doubled die in my loose coins. Now I am only need to find a 1 sen and 10 sen to complete my Malaysia Bunga Raya series doubled die coins!

    In my opinion, this is a Type V doubled die. A pivoted hub doubling, which occurs when the working hub is not properly aligned with the working die during the hubbing process. It is quite similar with Class I (Rotated Hub Doubling) but with the pivot point is located around the rim.

    The doubling on this coin is strongest on one side of the coin, which is in this coin's case is at the 1 o'clock position, and having no doubling at the opposite direction, the 6 o'clock direction.

   Looking at the strength of the doubling, I think this is quite a monster!

80. Malaysia 5 Sen 2008 Doubled Die Reverse ( DDR )

   My second doubled die coin!

    I think this is a Type IV Doubled Die Reverse ( DDR ) due to Offset Hub Doubling. Through my observation, all the doubling in the reverse are in the same direction, which is towards 11 o'clock direction offset. Furthermore, the degrees of doubling on the design elements around the rim as in the center of the coin are the same.

  This type of doubling happen occurs when the working hub is not alligned centrally exactly the same as the previous hubbing. Thus the die is hubbed with two different centers.

   Personally I think this is a quite nice doubled die coin. How can we categorized a doubled die coin as a monster?
