104. Bank Negara Malaysia to Issue New Series of Banknotes and Coins

Hello folks, this is an official statement from BNM.

Bank Negara Malaysia is pleased to announce that a new series design of Malaysian banknotes and coins will be issued for circulation in early 2012, an exercise that is undertaken periodically every twelve years. The theme of the design of the new currency series will include features that are distinctively Malaysia. It will also have enhanced security elements in line with the latest advancements in technology for currency notes.
The new fourth series design of banknotes will be featured in the denomination of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20 and RM100. The current design of the RM50 banknote already in circulation since December 2007 to commemorate Malaysia’s 50th Anniversary of Independence will continue to remain in circulation. The new design coins are the third in the series for the denominations of 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen. This new series of banknotes and coins will co-circulate with the existing series until the latter are gradually withdrawn from circulation.
In preparation for the issuance of the new currency series, Bank Negara Malaysia will be working closely with financial institutions, businesses and cash handling vendors to ensure a smooth transition to the new series. Vendors of cash handling machines will be given six months to calibrate their machines to ensure public convenience for the use of the new currency.
As part of the effort to increase public awareness on the new currency series, Bank Negara Malaysia will issue the commemorative coins for the third series and unveil the new fourth series banknotes design in the third quarter of 2011.

This is one of the coins which I have recently bought it from a local at Kelantan. It is being reported in Saran Singh's The Encylopaedia of the Coins of Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei 1400 - 1967 that the Sultan made a handsome profit on this coin as it contained less than ten times the amount of tin used on normal pitis. This triggers large-scale counterfeiting probably by the locals. The counterfeited ones has crude inscriptions.

Rarity level indicated by Saran Singh is Scarce.

For my 100th post, I want to share my latest entry to my Penang Coins collection. Owaa this coin makes me to go on diet, haha.

By the way, I notice that there is some slight miss struck on the obverse. Is that something normal to this coin or it is an error?

I no longer has any Penang coin to share, so I think for the next posts is Kelantan! Because I just got back from my village and I do not get back empty-handed. ;)

92.Malaysia x999 Filled Die Error

image 1: obverse and reverse of the coin

image 2: close up view

Only silhouette of the number 1 can be seen.  A type of minor error which can be found easily among our circulation coins. This post by  Mr Dickson describes how this happen in a simple way.

Usually die filled error does not have any premium but still of course you can sell it for mutual agreement, including to me. I am still interested in this die filled error because they can create speculation (not this specimen of course). For example if the last digit of the year on the coin cannot be seen, how would you guess the year the coin was minted for?

And through the net I have found out that a die filled error has caused an American coin to form the words " IN GOD WE RUST" instead of " IN GOD WE TRUST ". Quite interesting specimen to have isn't?

Apparently the 50 Sen of Bunga Raya series is the favourite homey for cuds!
