Duit lama negeri terengganu.. pitis malik al adil

Asyik dengan syiling moden sahaja, kali ni saya nak berkongsi koleksi terbaru saya. Syiling seperti dalam gambar di atas adalah syiling Negeri Terengganu.

Pada bahagian depan, tertulis dalam tulisan Jawi perkataan "Malik Al Adil" yang bermaksud "Pemerintah yang Adil", manakala di bahagian belakang kosong sahaja.

Syiling di atas, atau lazimnya dipanggil Pitis oleh masyarakat setempat adalah jenis yang biasa dijumpai. Akan tetapi untuk keadaan seperti yang di atas, bagi saya ini adalah keadaan yang terbaik. Mungkin sama taraf dengan UNC untuk syiling moden.

Lazimnya Kesultanan Melayu pada zaman dahulu menggunakan tiga jenis logam untuk menempa matawang - emas, perak dan timah. Untuk pitis di atas, ianya diperbuat daripada logam timah. Logam timah asalnya berwarna keperakan, akan tetapi apabila terdedah kepada persekitaran, ianya menjadi hitam.

Agaknya apa yang boleh dibeli dengan sekeping pitis di atas pada masa dahulu ya? Mungkin sepinggan nasi bersama lauk mungkin?

141. Terengganu Coin Pitis Sultan Baginda Omar 1849

        This is the same coin as I posted earlier here in a nicer condition. For those who are collecting Malay Sultanates coin, I suggest that this coin is a must in your collection. I repost the information of this coin for your convenience.

       Lot of these coins were found to be off-centered struck. A pair of perfectly-centered and off-centered struck coins would be good for collection I suppose.

      I think a price range of RM5 for poor condition to RM50 in a top grade condition is suitable for this coin.

Recently I got a lot of new and interesting Terengganu coins. Some of them are even unlisted in my reference! Among those coins, not many are having condition like this one. Almost third of it are blank coins. Actually they are not blank coins but they do look like so due to excessive corrosion of its surfaces.

One thing I notice about native coins is that, they are notorious with errors and varieties. In this post, you can compare 3 different specimens. The first specimen in the third image (SS reference) is the normal coin, whereas the second specimen in the third image is having hole, due to incomplete tin flow during its manufacturing process. And lastly my specimen here is having a very obvious bar inside the inscription. Quite similar with Johor's katun bar type. Interesting isn't? Wondering if the bar serves any purposes.

    Again, my collection of Terengganu coins. I guess not many coins are having incused inscription, which makes this series quite unique. At first I want to let go one of these coins, but I changed my mind as one of it is an error coin.

   Saran Singh had translated the inscription on this coin as Duriba fi Tarkanu. As someone who can read and write a little in Jawi, unfortunately I cannot find the letter ba that brings the third syllables in the word Duriba. The letter ba should be look like this. ""

    Hello there. This is the newest addition into my collection which I acquired through a local some weeks ago. This coin was discovered from the river shore of Sungai Terengganu. The deepening work for Monsoon Cup to Sungai Terengganu has unearthed this coin to the surface.

     I have a pair of this coin, which the other one is in really  bad condition. Only a very small part of leaves are visible on the reverse part. How can this piece escaped natural corrosion? Perhaps she was entrapped in an isolated place ?

    From reference, it has been noted that counterfeited exists made from lead and tin, and those can be bend easily. I had try the bend test with this one, to my relief it can't be bend! I was afraid a little more force can crack her.

   By the way, I just love you. Ahah XD

8. Terengganu Coin Kali Malik Al Adil 1 Pitis / 1 Keping

     Recently I bought this coin from a dealer from Indonesia. He has a lot of old Indonesian coins such as Srivijaya and Palembang sultanate coins, and this coin is among in his listing. The price of this coin is approximately just below RM60 per pieces. How can Terengganu's coin reached Indonesia? Big possibility is due to the coin being used as trade by merchants during that time.

   Below is the information regarding this coin. The obverse of the coin shows in Arabic / Jawi " Kali Malik Al Adil", means The Reign of Just Ruler. The inscription is written left to right. The reverse and edge of this coin is plain. The weight varies from 1.10g, 2.20g, and 3.80g. This coin shown here is 2.20g and 20.0mm in diameter. The diameter also varies from 17.5mm, 20.0mm and 21.5mm. The denomination is 1 Pitis or 1 Keping. It is believed that the period for this coin is from late 18th century to early 19th century. The coin was casted from parent tree money and sometime it has defects such as improper metal flow, hole, or cut mark.

     For those who are having difficulty in reading the inscription, I will try to help you by using the photo below. The yellow line represents the wordings on the coin.

     The jawi writings on the coin clearly spell Kali Malik Al Adil. But I wonder what is the meaning for the symbol "o" after the work Adil. The symbol "o" is 5 in Arabic and most of the sample in Interent has this marking.

    From the photo above, we can see the cut mark of the coin. The cut mark usually exist and sometime the coin has a very serious cut mark due to improper cutting from its parent tree.

     The seller guaranteed to me that this is genuine coin and so far I am positive that this is a genuine one. Do you have any idea on how to diffentiate a genuine and a fake one?
